Travelling with your dog: preparation, documents and essentials

A holiday with your dog is far less stressful when they have a little piece of home with them and all the paperwork has been arranged in advance.

Documents When travelling to EU countries, your dog will need an EU pet passport, a microchip and a valid rabies vaccination (at least 21 days must have passed since the first dose). Some countries also require vet-certified worming before entry. Check the requirements for your destination one month before travelling.

What to pack Your dog's own bed or at least a portable mat, their favourite blanket, two bowls, enough of their usual food for the entire stay, a lead and a spare, a first-aid kit, travel documents and a tick-removal tool.

Accommodation Check the dog policy in advance and create a clearly defined resting place for your dog as soon as you arrive. A familiar mat in new surroundings can reduce the adjustment period from days to hours.

Heat and water In summer, plan walks and activities for the morning and evening. Offer water more frequently than you would at home.

The first few hours Walk around the local area with your dog on a lead so they can familiarise themselves with the scents. Then let them rest.
