Where should your dog sleep? A place that works for you both

Where your dog sleeps affects the quality of their rest just as much as the bed itself. Dogs are social animals — they want to be close to their family, but they also need a place where no one will step over them.

Three rules for choosing the right spot First, keep the bed away from busy walkways — not in a doorway, hallway or by the entrance. Second, position it with a view of the room and its back to a wall. Third, avoid draughts and direct sunlight.

The bedroom: yes or no? Letting your dog sleep in the bedroom is not a training mistake. If they do not disturb your sleep, it can be the most peaceful place in the home. The important thing is for them to have their own bed and, if they are not allowed on yours, to apply that rule consistently every day.

More beds, fewer conflicts In a multi-dog household, follow the n+1 rule: provide one more bed than there are dogs. This helps reduce tension over resources.

Moving to a new sleeping spot Introduce a new bed or sleeping spot gradually. Place a familiar blanket on it, feed your dog nearby and reward them whenever they lie down there of their own accord. Most dogs adjust within a week.
