Why your dog sleeps restlessly: common causes and solutions

Overheating, pain, too little exercise or an unsuitable bed. How to identify the cause.

Restless sleep almost always has a specific cause. It helps to work through the possible explanations, starting with the simplest.

Temperature Dogs lose heat mainly through panting and their bellies. In summer, a bed beside a radiator or with thick, plush filling can leave your dog getting up repeatedly to seek out cool tiles. During warmer months, try a thinner mat in a cooler spot.

Too little exercise and stimulation A dog that has had nothing to do all day may struggle to switch off in the evening. Scent work can help — ten minutes spent searching for kibble can be more tiring than an hour of running.

Too much stimulation before bedtime Play, visitors or training just before bedtime can raise adrenaline levels. Introduce a calming routine instead: a short walk followed by quiet time.

Pain and joints A dog that repeatedly changes position and cannot get comfortable may be experiencing back or hip pain. Flattened filling can make the problem worse. A thicker foam core often brings an improvement within a few nights.

When to see a vet Snoring accompanied by pauses in breathing, whimpering at night, a sudden change in behaviour or being unable to lie down at all are all reasons to seek veterinary advice.
