Puppy essentials: what you really need in the first month

Most checklists for new puppy owners are needlessly long. For the first month, you only need a few essentials — but choosing the right ones matters.

A bed and travel mat Choose one main bed for the room where the family spends most of its time, plus a portable mat for the car or crate. For a puppy, a removable, washable cover matters more than a luxurious filling.

Bowls and food You will need two bowls, ideally stainless steel. For the first two weeks, continue feeding your puppy the same food they had with the breeder, then make any changes gradually over seven days.

Harness and lead A lightweight Y-shaped harness is ideal for a puppy, as it does not put pressure on the shoulders. A fixed 150 cm lead will serve you better than a retractable one.

Toys and scent work Choose two or three toys with different textures, plus one that can be filled with food. Scattering kibble across the grass will tire your puppy out more effectively than running.

What can wait Clothing, height-adjustable bowl stands, a large crate for an adult dog and a second bed can all wait. Buy them once you know what your puppy will genuinely use.
